People & Planet Fair
It was a gray and drizzly start to our inaugural Earth Day 5K at the People and Planet Fair at Snyder Park in Ft. Lauderdale. But that did not stop over 220 walkers and runners from completing their objective of having fun, getting some exercise, and raising funds for their respective charities. That was just the first of many events planned for the day, hosted by the Kids Ecology Corps and the City of Ft. Lauderdale, organized by TAG Events and GreenProfit Solutions, Inc.
The weather did clear, and after the walkers and runners received their awards, Lee Gottlieb, KEC’s Eco-Action Project Manager, took charge of over 200 volunteers who, throughout the day, planted over 700 native trees and shrubs, as part of an invasive plant removal and native plant restoration initiative. KEC’s planting initiatives last year alone generated over 12,000 new mangroves, helping to restore native habitats for flora and fauna and maintain healthy beaches.
People arrived at the Fair throughout the day, stopping by the green vendors’ booths, observing recycled art, and simply enjoying the various entertainment options under the shade of native oak trees. The kids were continually engaged by the children’s petting zoo, a hands-on ecology and art area, special children’s entertainment and of course, great food. The community bloodmobile was on-site to accommodate those individuals who wished to donate life.
Many thanks to sponsors, Lexus of Pembroke Pines, who brought out three of their new hybrid vehicles; Bank Atlantic, and to all of those who volunteered their time.
We look forward to building an even bigger and better People and Planet Fair for 2011.
